Critical gaps in care for developmentally disabled must be addressed | Opinion
Cincinnati Enquirer | March 5, 2024
Parenting a child with developmental disabilities is both incredibly rewarding and extremely difficult. It's a journey filled with love and resilience, yet marked by frustration at a system that often falls short.

Raising Audrey, our daughter who was born with autism and cognitive impairment, taught my wife Leslie and me the meaning of unconditional love and included moments of pure joy at her achievements. However, we also came to know the isolation, loneliness, anger, fear and − at times − hopelessness that surrounds all aspects of one’s life caring for a child or adult with developmental disabilities.

Together, we came to know the constant strain of fighting for services, day-to-day care and unexpected crises. We gained empathy for folks who are forced to rely completely on state and county services, and we can attest that our community possesses significant numbers of caring and dedicated public and private service providers, families, philanthropists and volunteers.
